| Painter of romantic landscapes, Blechen went to Berlin when he was 16 years old and worked in banking after completing his commercial studies. In 1822 however, he gave up his profession and started studies at the Art Academy in Berlin. His teachers were Lemmerich and Lütke. In Dresden he saw the works of C.D. Friedrich and J.C. Dahl which influenced him deeply. Thanks to Schinkel he worked as a stage painter in Berlin from 1824 until 1827. After a journey through Italy (1829/1830) his style became more realistic. He was one of the first to paint industrial scenes. But he suffered from depressions and had to be placed in a mental hospital. There he died insane. |
