| The most famous artist of the Hoosier School he became known as an American Master of Light. His talent was recognized early and studied in The Art Institute of Chicago, The Indiana School of Art and at the Munich Royal Academy. He, along with other members of the Hoosier Group, were instrumental in founding the John Herron Art Institute which opened in 1905 on the site of his former home. His artistic style began to change from a more conservative style to Impressionist style when he went to the Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893 and saw a big collection of actual French Impressionism paintings. From that point onward his landscapes began to change. His portraits were different from the landscape work. One day he could go out and paint a dark and dignified realist portrait, and the next afternoon he could go out and paint an Impressionist painting. Steele is considered to be one of the finest of the American Impressionist painters to work in the Midwest. |
