| The Kentucky-born Curran began his artistic study at the Cincinnati School of Design. He sought subsequent training at the Art Students League in New York City and the Academie Julian in Paris. Curran eventually settled in Cragsmoor, near Ellenville in the Hudson River Valley. Between 1885 and 1888, Curran painted peasants in the vein of the French artist Jules Bastien-Lepage (1848-1884), who combined the solidity of academic form with Impressionistic color and brushwork. His work demonstrates interest in imitating the French style of combining realism with plein airism (depicting figure in landscape and combining tonal value with decorative effect). |
