| Kahlo was born in the Mexico City suburb of Coyoacan to a Hungarian-Jewish father and a mother of Spanish and Mexican Indian descent. She began to paint in 1925 while recovering from a streetcar accident that left her permanently disabled. She underwent more than thirty operations during her life and her paintings seemed to reflect the pain she suffered after that accident. Kahlo met Diego Rivera in 1928 and they married in 1929, they shared a firm belief in Communism and also a passionate interest in the indigenous culture of Mexico. Kahlo paintings were mostly self-portraits and still lifes, were deliberately naive, filled with the bright colors and flattened forms of the Mexican folk art she loved. |
