Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio
1571-1610
European Artist
Caravaggio was born in the village of Caravaggio, in Lombardy, Italy from which he received his name. He was originally a mason's laborer, but his powerful genius directed him to painting, at which he worked with immitigable energy and amazing force. Arriving in Rome he acquired, with characteristic eagerness, a thorough understanding of the approach of the Lombard and Venetian painters, who, opposed to idealized Florentine painting, had developed a style that was nearer to representing nature and events. Few artists in history have exercised as extraordinary an influence as this tempestuous and short-lived painter.
