Giovanni Antonio Canal, called Canaletto is one of the most popular of all old master painters, admired for his magnificent views of Venice and London. In the words of one of his contemporaries, Canaletto had the power to paint so that 'the eye is deceived and truly believes it is the real thing it sees'. He spent his formative years in Venice and is best known for his depictions of the buildings, canals and festivals of his native city, but he also spent several years in England, where he painted many stunning London scenes. He was the most distinguished Italian view painter of the 18th century. Canaletto was very much favored by English collectors. Canaletto made meticulous preparatory drawings but he always remained concerned with creating a good composition, at times compromising true accuracy. He found that providing paintings for the visitors to Venice, to be very lucrative. These works are often what is most associated with Canaletto, but he should perhaps be more known for his earlier works, for his private patrons, where there was no compromise whatsoever. Canaletto was without doubt one of the finest Italian Rococo painters and etchers. You can purchase this reproduction oil painting framed or unframed in any size and it will certainly grace your wall for many years to come.
